Curriculum and Instruction

A letter from a teacher.

Here at EmpowerEd, our mission is to provide an exceptional educational environment where all are encouraged to be responsible, resilient, compassionate, and connected. Here is how our teacher visions our mission in a creative learning community:

EmpowerEd fosters growth in every kid's intellectual, social, emotional, and physical capacities. Not only is this important for growth as human beings, it also aligns with research-based best practices for teaching and learning.

Personalized learning is one daily component of EmpowerEd. Kids and their families work with the teacher to build a personalized learning plan. Based on the kids' interests and content standards, we create learning goals together and assess progress toward these goals. Personalized learning and daily lessons are organized in each student’s learning portfolio. Kids work individually or in small groups each day while teachers provide one-on-one support strategically to move student learning forward.

Curiosity and wonder drive learning. Kids at EmpowerEd learn about the world we live in through a combination of the inquiry process and direct instruction. Phenomena and experiences spark curiosity and drive us to explore, experiment, and research the structure of our world. We will welcome guest speakers, take field trips to explore our world, and complete class projects. Through inquiry, students build upon prior learning, strengthen connections across concepts, and deepen conceptual understanding. This process works especially well for mathematics, science, and social studies.

Everyone has insight to share and we learn from one another. Literacy is essential for both self-expression and professional communication. Kids write to express, inform, and persuade. Kids read, analyze, and interpret a variety of texts connected to their interests and our shared learning topics. We engage in large group, small group, and teacher-kid discourse, both verbally and in writing. Finally, we have quiet time to read for pleasure daily.

Now more than ever, the importance of social and emotional learning in the classroom is clear. Another essential part of our curriculum includes building skills in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. Lessons will include information on neuroscience and psychology that relates to learning, wellness, and social interaction.

Whole-class, mixed age collaboration is an exciting opportunity at EmpowerEd. Students bring diverse strengths and needs to the classroom and represent a developmental spectrum. Developmentally appropriate learning is incredibly powerful: the learning needs of a young child and an older adolescent are quite different and meeting each person’s needs is essential to our community. We will meet each learner where they are and move forward together. We care for the needs of ourselves and others. We are stronger together.
