Nik Towne

Nik Towne taught for sixteen years in public school settings as a Special Education teacher, reading teacher, interventionist, science teacher, and preschool teacher. His degree is in Special Education and Early Childhood Education, and he believes that all children do their best learning when they feel safe and supported. He has taught all grade levels, from early childhood through seniors in high school. His passion is helping students reach their potential through their own hard work and to feel successful about their accomplishments.

Nik devoted twelve years of his life to creating an off-grid homestead on the prairie. He and his wife hand-built a strawbale home with mostly recycled materials, powered very few modern conveniences with solar panels and a windmill, cared for a small hobby farm, and worked diligently to restore eighty acres of overgrazed prairie to a place with abundant native plants and wildlife. He and his wife fostered six children during this time and enjoyed caring for them.

Nik believes in promoting diversity. He believes that it is our differences that make our communities strong. He is an advocate for rights for LGBTQ+ youth as well as people with different abilities. He spends his free time hiking, swimming, and enjoying the beautiful Black Hills with his wife Teresa and son Viktor.

Message from the Founder

Dear families,

Welcome to EmpowerEd! I am delighted that you are joining us this year. Throughout your time with us, I hope you find more than a safe space for your child to learn the 3Rs (Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic). I hope you find an exciting, engaging, and empowering learning community where your kid can grow as a whole person: intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically.

As a mother, I want the best for my kid, just as you do. I dreamed of an environment in which my daughter and all kids could thrive. Where every kid is valued and challenged. A community where we encourage kids' curiosity, their respect for others, and their responsibility to the world. I want our kids to be healthy in body and strong in character; to find a balance between critical thinking and compassionate action; and to be generous of spirit and kind in their words and deeds. I want a safe and supportive educational environment that sees who they are and helps them to grow.

As a teacher, I understand how important it is to have a high quality education, and that it can take many different forms. At EmpowerEd we go beyond intellectual success and integrate social, emotional, and physical learning as well. First, we built our foundation on research about child development and how the brain and body work. Then we created a curriculum based on best practices and integrated state and national standards. Finally, as we welcome children into our program, we incorporate their personal interests and goals to develop real-world projects.

EmpowerEd was created by passionate parents, experienced teachers, and caring community members and we are excited to share it with you. Welcome to the EmpowerEd community!

Sincerely,

Angela Giffin
